Synopsis:

Harold Holt the 22^nd Prime Minister of Australian disappeared on the 17^th of December 1967. Exactly how Harold Holt disappeared can never be definitely accounted for by a specific cause. This can be accounted due to the absence of Holts Body. However the various theories have been assessed based o their reliability, origin, motive, the context of the historian and the theory, all which are crucial elements which must be scrutinized in order to assess the likelihood of the theory. There are numerous theories which have risen; the theories which have been evaluated are:

            The traditional theory that the majority of Historians support which the media also agrees with; that Holt simply disappeared due to natural cases, the most commonly believed natural cause is drowning, that Holt was simply overwhelmed by the turbulent waters. This theory is expressed in the biography of Holt by Tom Frame entitled; "The Life and Death of Harold Holt" published in 2005.

The Chinese submarine theory which was founded by Anthony Grey and documented in the fictional novel "The Prime Minister Was A Spy" released In 1983; stating that Holt was a spy for Communist China and was evacuated to China, via a Chinese Submarine.

The last theory delved into is the suicide theory, that Holt committed suicide, which was never in-depth been focused on by one particular historian, rather remained a known theory throughout time.

These theories have chosen for evaluation due to either its prominence or the theories matter. It has become clear throughout evaluating the different theories, that the traditional theory is the most probable theory due to it reliability

Harold Holt the 22^nd prime minister of Australia disappeared on the 17^th of December, 1967. This has led to a number of theories relating to the death of Harold Holt, these theories will be evaluated in relation to their possibility, including such essential elements as the historians whom founded the various theories. This will be discussed below.

Harold Holt, the 22^nd Prime minister of Australia, disappeared after a swim in cheviot beach on the 17^th of December 1967. Holt’s corpse was never found, thus giving rise to numerous conspiracies. The traditional and initial view expressed by the media and most historians at the time and at this present day is that Harold Holt simply drowned. A prominent historian whom promotes this theory is Tom frame, author of the biography “The Life and Death of Harold Holt”, dealing with the life of Harold Holt, his death and evaluates the theories.

This is how Frame accounts for Holt’s death: “As Holt swam into deeper water, he appeared to enter the end of a Y-shaped pool near a rock ledge, which was hidden by the sea. The tail of the Y was the outlet form the rock ledge and affected by a strong undertow of several knots’ strength…Holt was enveloped by swirling turbulent water that appeared to drag him further out to sea”. This visibly shows Frames account of events; that Holt had drowned. He uses numerous quotes from eye witnesses to back up his argument:

“(Mrs Gillespie) she later remarked: ’It was like a leaf being taken out. It was so quick and so final’.” Mrs Gillespie, a woman, whom was with Holt at the time, on the beach.

“(Alan Stewart) While remaining calm, he explained…that the Prime minister ‘is in difficulties as he went swimming and he has not been sighted owing to the very big surf’.”

Tom Frame has an outstanding history, which gives Frame credibility, thus his theory reliability (especially when in contrast to other historians such as Grey, Simmons or Titcombe). Frame has served the Royal Australian Navy for thirteen years(1979-1292), as a junior entry cadet midshipman, a Sub-lieutenant, the research officer to the chef of naval staff, an instructor, staff officer and moved to the Australian Defence force to take up a PhD in Military history. In 1992, Frame resigned from RAN to finish his training for the Anglican priesthood, and was ordained in 1993, and has since been practising his faith as a Bishop to the Australian Defence force, and has also written seventeen books. His professional career suggests that he has a high degree of skill, as this is required to obtain positions of authority within the Australian defence force. We can also assume that he is a fairly trustworthy and reliable person, as trust reliability is required to move up in the professional ranks. His successful career as a bishop also suggests that he has a great deal of moral fibre and faith. This is of course are just assumptions, however are likely, these assumptions on their own to not give Frame’s theory truthfulness, however do add to its credibility, thus the theories reliability.

Now that it is established that Frame has reliability, does he have biasness? Frames motive, is to present Holts career, without it being overshadowed by his death, to show Holt as a P.M whom made considerable positive contributions to politics. Although it is Frames motive to paint Holt in a positive light, he does acknowledge negative aspects of his character, and negative views people hold again Holt, and stated that Holt had the “inability to manage power and deal with opposition”, and he includes a source saying that Holt saw “’all people through rose-tinted spectacles. He seemed quite incapable of saying an unkind word about anybody.’”. This clearly shows how Frame has tried to objectively write about Holt, amidst the fact that his motive is o paint Holt in a positive light. This shows how his biasness does not affect the reliability of his content.

The context in which Frame was born, gives him no emotional link to Holt, as he was born in 1962, thus would have only been a young boy when the disappearance occurred, and even recounts in the book; “I remember the day that Harold Holt disappeared in the surf off Portsea as my first clear memory of an Australian political Event” This clearly indicated, his youth at the time. The fact that the most prominent memory of the event was the fact that it was his first political event to witness, shows the lack of emotional attachment to the event, thus has limited biasness, once again reinforcing his theories reliability. 

It is also notable, that the media response at the time of the disappearance also coincides with Frames theory, as well as at the time of the Victoria inquest. In time magazine on the 29^th of December 1967, an article featuring Holt and his death, talks about the disappearance and death of Holt, like most media opinion, it states that holt died by drowning “Last week Harold Holt, 59, was captured for good by the sea that he loved so much.” And time magazine, continue on with this same message, and as stated in an article in the 19^th of January 1968 article “Australia's 19th Prime Minister—succeeding the late Harold Holt, who drowned last month off Portsea”.  From various newspaper articles, sourced form the book; Australian Events (a catalogue of newspaper articles throughout the years) entitled; “PM feared downed”, “…and has been presumed drowned”, “Mr holt, 59, was swimming in very heavy surf at cheviot beach” this article was published on the 18th of December 1967. Another newspaper article’s headline states; World leaders pay homage to PM” published on the 22^nd of December 1967, and also states; “who (Holt) went missing in heavy surf of Portsea last weekend” All of these quotes clearly eluding to the fact that Holt drowned, not acknowledging any conspiracy. It is clear that the media opinion throughout time has been that Holt drowned, however, some other conspiracies did rise to prominence, how and why did this occur?

The initial and most obvious factor is the absence of a body. This factor has been existent from the very start of the event till present day. The first conspiracy to rise to prominence was the suicide theory. The first to allude to the theory was “life magazine”. This provided an intriguing new angle, a little touch of scandal to the event. The theory also originated from Don Whitington, in his book ‘Twelfth man?’ released in 1972, in which he states: “there have been stories circulating since (his death) that he wanted to die and chose his opportunity, but there is no evidence to support them” This clearly gives a immediate time frame to the suicide theory, as it clearly existed before 1972. A reason why this, can be attributed to the climate of the time, coinciding with the recent scandalous death of Kennedy.  Thus it can be stated that some people simply liked the idea of an Australian scandal, and instead of looking for the answer to the mystery, looked for valediction for their desired theory.

The next theory to rise to prominence is Chinese spy and submarine theory; the origin was Grey’s 1983 book “The Prime Minister was a Spy” thus the time frame of which this theory came into prominence was 1983. This yet again can be linked with the continuing climate, with the constant threat of communism in the Western world. Dating back to the 60’s with the Vietnam War, a direct result of this utter abhor and paranoia towards communism form the western world.

The was another theory of the CIA assassinating Holt, this theory

published in 1983. This book states that Holt was whisked away in a submarine to china to live out the rest of his days in the foreign land, because he was spy.

Grey has a considerable amount of biasness, and gives numerous reasons to doubt his credibility, thus his conspiracies reliability and truthfulness.

We must first look at his context. Anthony Grey was thrusted into fame from his book 'Peking'. From 1997 – 69 Grey was in Peking as a hostage. This is obviously a tormenting experience, which perhaps some would never recover from. Similar to people who have experienced war (as grey has also experienced a similar situation) they can and commonly develop a syndrome called 'post traumatic stress syndrome'. Such symptoms of this syndrome are a constant state of paranoia. Now this is definitely not to suggest that Anthony has PTSS, but it must be looked at as a possibility, that after the traumatic hostage experience in Peking that he did develop some paranoid tendencies and possibly PTSS, and could explain the irrational and farfetched theories he has produced, with little evidence backing (which will be explained later)

Another possibility is that after the huge success of the novel 'Peking' that Grey, like many other novelists, realised the material needed for the book to be interesting enough and to attract enough attention in order to have similar success, thus perhaps when the chance to write about the much public and talked about disappearance of an Australian Prime minister (presented by Ronald Titcombe who will be discussed further on), he saw the value in this. Once again I stress the fact that these are all possibilities, they are not fact, but must be taken into consideration in evaluating the theories reliability and truthfulness.

Grey’s professional career, as well as his interests leads to cause for doubt of his credibility. This is evident not only through his numerous conspiracy based books, but his involvement with extra terrestrial phenomenon’s; this can be seen through his interest with UFO's, as he began researching them in the early 1990's onward. Further more he even broad casted his ideas on UFO's in a three part documentary series on BBC world Service in 1996/7 entitled “UFO's Fact, Fiction or Fantasy”. To further add to the Greys peculiar extracurricular activities list, he is a predominate member of the Raelian Movement in the Late 1990's.

Raelian is a science fiction religion, which is renowned (like his book on Holt) for its fancifulness. This shows a tendency for interest in farfetched conspiracy, and then considering the fact that “The Prime Minister was a Spy” is (like the raelian movement) considered a fanciful conspiracy, it does make us question Grey’s motive and reliability once more.

Continuing on the issue of Greys reliability, his books predominately Asian based; Hostage in Peking, Crosswords from Peking, Chinese puzzles ,The Chinese assassin , Saigon , Peking , The Bangkok secret and Tokyo Bay.

By simply glancing over the numerous Asian titles books he has published, it becomes evident his fascination with Asia, which begs the question, is his fictional book “the prime minister is a spy” simply another book to add to the collection. We must ask the question, did Greys fascination of Asia, the motive for not only writing the book, but believing the theory all together.

Grey states that Holt, fearing detection by the Australian intelligence officers, had sought political asylum in china via the Chinese submarine of the Portsea coast. This statement has many flaws in it. The first flaw in this statement which I shall rebut will be the matter of the submarine. The proclamation that a submarine, which doesn’t have permission to be in Australian waters can make its way, all the way to Australia, and be close enough for there to be a successful transportation of Holt. Expanding upon this, they would have to be quite close, as there is only so long a person can last without oxygen, and battling against his age and the turbulent sea’s, it would be a hard task to go far, against the tides, and reach the submarine in time. Further more, there is only so close a submarine can be to shore, due to its size, further more, this distance away form he shore would have to have been increased due to the turbulent seas. Further more, the turbulent seas, could have possibly exposed the submarine.

The next flaw which shall be delved into is the issue of china. The idea that a Prime minister would be a secret agent for another country is highly fanciful. The likely hood of that Prime minister being from a democratic society, being the spy for a communist country decreases what would have been minimal chances, tenfold. It is just inconceivable that some one whom whose was the prime minister of a DEMOCRATIC society, who supported the slogan ‘all the way with L.BJ’ thus supported the country who was leading the crusade against communism is ridiculous. Holts clearly didn’t support communism, ands this is evident, as he allowed and encouraged Australia’s involvement in Vietnam War, a war waged against the spread of communism. On a much lighter note, Holt’s wife Zara has been quoted saying with reference to her husband opting to live in china “Harry? Chinese submarine? He didn't even like Chinese cooking"

Grey’s origins of his conspiracy, add to the suspicion, further giving reason the doubt the theory. Ronald Titcombe, is the original founder of the theory, it was simply Grey whom brought the theory to wide spread media attention.  Titcombe’s reliability is also questionable, a former navy diver, forced to resign in 1968 due to refusal to reveal his questionable financial history. Titcombe meet with Grey in London (the exact time has never been specified) and handed over the manuscript which Grey based the book on. Titcombe has been described by Tom Frame, a credible historian as a ‘professional conman’ and states “having spoken to Titcombe myself, I believe the story is a complete fabrication,"

It can be easily evaluated, that Greys content, isn’t likely, which is further reinforced by his biasness, personal context, motive, his lack of reliability and credibility and the unreliable origin/source.

Another theory is founded by Gary Simmons. This theory states, that Holt was not only murdered, but that he was involved In the dumping of the Holts body. Simmons claims that the original plan, was for the tether which was attached to an anchor, which holt was attached to, to undo in a couple of days, and for The dead body to surface; "I think that I took him too deep. It’s been my experience that bodies down 70 feet or more don't come back up.". Further more, Simmons also states, that the body was dumped, on the 16^th of December 1967, the day before his disappearance. It is undeniable evident that Holt was alive on the 17^th, making Simmons theory impossible. This is the type of company, that historians like Grey are in the same category with. This shows to what infinite lengths some of the conspiracies extent to, thus emphasizing Greys, and other historians whom pursue fanciful theory’s possibility for their theory to be simply a theory, based on lies.

In summation, the theories that do not support Holt dying due to natural causes have just too much reasonable doubt to be considered. Most of the historians believe that Holt had died form natural causes, and this is the most probable reason. It isn’t, and probably will never be known, the exact details to his description, but the general picture that he drowned is most logical.

The next theory that I will be looking at, is founded by Gary Simmons, a former Royal Australian Navy diver claims that he not only saw Holt’s dead murdered carcass, but he was involved in the disposing of the body. Simmons claims, that he was involved in the dumping of the body, an that the original plan was for the tether which was attached to Holt was suppose to undo in a couple of days, and Holts body was suppose to surface, but the plan fell through "That part of the plan failed, for some reason," he said. "I think that I took him too deep. It’s been my experience that bodies down 70 feet or more don't come back up." His theories are documented on his website dedicated to Harold Holt http://www.haroldholt.net/ This website however, is once again cause gives reason to doubt his claims, as he is mostly dedicated to avenging the operation that he claims was done without his permission. This is evident as most of the content is consumed by x-rays, doctors comments, numerous court letters, statements from Centerlink, and his own unanswered letters; all of which  discuss the illedged forced and surprise operation from somewhere during 1965-71. This then shows for over at least 35 years, Simmons has held a grudge, and still pursues vengeance against the operation. This clearly displays his own personal motives, and questions his motive to tell the truth about Holt.

Just like all of the other theories, it gives much tedious reason for suspicion, as to why a government would order the assassination of a Prime minister, whom wasn’t making a bad impact on the country, and actually wanted the body to surface, and be found, as opposed to remaining disappeared, thus obviously making it harder to tie the murder to the culprits its ridiculous, it simply makes more sense that the people whom supposedly ordered the assassination of a Prime minister would put a little more logical thought into such a high profile assassination. Further more, it would be logical to only involve people in the assassination, whom are either extremely trustworthy, or who support the assassination, thus limiting chances of the truth being leaked. These are all questions which Simmons does not attempt to answer, claiming he was the innocent pawn in the plot, not informed of nay decisions, and completely in the dark, which is once again just too coincidental.

Out of all of the suspicion, the most blatant cause to completely dismiss Simmons deluded claims, is his testimony, that the night before Holt was reported missing (17^th of Dec 1936), was the night, were Simmons, anchored the supposedly alive body to the sea floor. This has one fatal flaw, the fact that Holt on the 17^th of December was undeniably alive, as he was around numerous family members. The likelihood, that his body was anchored to the bottom of the seafloor, on the 16^th of December, then on the 17^th he spent the morning with his family relaxing, and then throughout the course of the managed to die from the acts played out on the 16^th of December is impossible, thus Simmons claims are absolutely dismissed.

I'm back???, are you excited to read another one of my blogs? arrh I lost my dam chewing gum that i took at of my mouth at recess I swear I had it between abit of paper. dam that was like the second piece of gum i have lost today, (ms Colling made me spit out my first one during modern history, BITCH, she was going to give me a second gum fine but i think she hasitated when i kindly remined her of the card Elinor and I wrote for her the other day). I mite go and fetch the gum out of the bin later. I was chewing on that piece of gum for ages it was tennder plus i twisted it around with my fingers a few times to make it abit more chewey, the bacteria made it even more delious, yum yum.

By the way can u believe it I have been invited to not one but two 18th Birthday Partys on Saturday 24th June. Orrr how cool i can go to one then the other and only have to get all dressed up once, i can't wait! It will be like a big nite out. Hopefully i will see if i am a happy or sad drunk.

ORRR it was was so hilarious the other day with Ms Shaw in maths Elinor and I wanted to go to the canteen so even before the bell went we both waited at the door and slowly ran, i so felt like a rebel. i brought a chicken taboli rap and garlic bread it was nice, but like c mon three bucks for some taboli and chicken, pleasssssssssseeeeee snare. Just like how elise expects us to put in $5 each to buy a stupid voucher to raffle off so we can rase 100 bucks for caratas and get 25 points for that hunt crap, sorrrrrrrrryyyy like fair enough put some effort into it but i am SO not going to put $5 of my money to make money so we can possbily i repeat possibly get 25% of our formal ticket. I would prefer to get some random kids to run in a race and get people to bet on whos going to win, that would be far more worthwhile, don't u think? We would make a $100 easy and stuff having to give the winners money like please, who do they think we are the TAB.

And can you believe it the formal is in like a few weeks, that is just crap they didn't even give us any notice stuff that I'm not gonna go, hey everyone how bout we all not go, and maybe just maybe they will make it on a later date. Oh sorry wat was that its the Marist Formal thats on in a few weeks oh "face goes red".

Oh guess what Annabelle now has to stay in the middle of the garden bed in the Senior Area for the WHOLE of lunchtime tommrow, because i did that blabla black sheep hoe down during my speech. She has to stay there the whole of lunch time and even if a teacher tells her to get out of the garden she has to stay there. I am going to throw apple cores and mandain pills at her. It will be abit different for a change, i can like throw them at some one instead of usually carelessly throwing them on the grass, do u think that maybe i should just save a few to put on the grass to fertilise it. Oh that throwing the apple core at people so reminds me of the time in year ten where Elizabeth ran after me with my apple core. I ran like a fool, and like she kept throwing it at me but it missed and landed in dirt. By the time she finally hit me it was really gross, hit me splat bank on my back, left a real nice mark on my blazer, and Kat and Freda the bitches just laughed at me, like i would not have eva even thought of doing anything like that to them, how dare they laugh i thought. I was so offended. Anyway i expect heaps of love so give me those comments

Ah yes, another day, another blog …. Lets recap on days of lustful reminiscing..

After much deliberation, and thinking, I have decided to give my faithful readers another dose of blog entry’s, for tis good for thou soul… hmm.. I have promised myself to be PARTICULARLY ‘gay’ in this blog entry. I would also like to pay tribute, to my many fans, whom treasured my last entry, the feedback I received was truly inspiring, and makes me happy to get out of bed in the morning, it is what I like to call ‘soul food’ then again I also like to call frozen peas ‘soul food’ then again do you even care… but of course you do. Lets commence, what have I been occupying myself with lately, writing blog entries hasn’t been one of them, as I hired another to do so in the guise of myself, thus I have become a master of trickery

WEEELLL happy easter everyone..

I have decided that im not Christian nemore. Nothing big or nething, it just isn’t for me..buh I still obviously believe in an after life n all that, just not Christianity.. its complicated, so yea, that was a surprise esp at easter time… o well

Buh for all u Christians n chocolate luvers (ELIE) happy easter…. May you have left over chocolate for weeks!!! WEEELLL as you know we went to gym.. Which was funni, and we slept over at my house.. funni!!! Ahah n pancakes the nxt morn, n then shopping. Ive been working heaps lately!! N im serz considering leaving…. To go n work at GOLO!!!! Ahah yeah!!! So yea I have to write a resume. N {BRACE YOURSELF} I am actually going for ma L’s these hols so yes wich me goodluck…

. n as you all know I went to the Easter show, n of course the infamous party at Carla’s house, which was a story and a half.. I willl NNNEEEEVVVAAAA forget that night!!! Ahahha never ever!!!! Everyone enjoyed my many stories of awkwardness!!! It was noice to catch up!!

TODAY… I got ma eyelashes tinted, got a haircut

Spent about 20 minutes swinging on the swings, and wah else…started shopping for all mh art materials, bought sum steel/ aluminium stuff, and got some really good ideas for what to buy, so now I have really good direction, and know where to start looking!!! So that makes me VEWY happy!!! WooT I’ve also been wlaking heaps, eg to Parramatta form ma home, or to gym n bak (bcoz it was closed to I had to wlk bak) so that’s been… interesting.. o yea n my latest gripe is:

I think people who smash beer bottles onfootpaths r bloody selfish, I mean when I was wlking past the park the amount of friggen glass was distgusting, n poor rolly, I just ended up picking him up n carrying him for like 10 minutes!!!i was realli annoyed, everyone would have thought I was weird carrying my dog like that!!! Ahah o well!!1 I don’t wnt ma dogs feet to bcum all cut n bleeding!!!

In lighter news I have been feeding on $3.95 sub of the day, today’s was chicken fillet which was noice so I was quite pleased with myself, n the other day was which cheese steak, which was also nice, so once again I was left with a feeling of accomplishment!!

I’ve got another 3 exams which I shall b studying for. My auntie kely and Grandma are up for the moment.. n its funni bcoz all of ma fam r gonna c me speak. Gma, aunt kely, mum n maybe even uncle scot so that’s new for me…n they were joking that they wanted to hold up posters, and kely wants to bribe the judges with coockies if ill give her a share of the $200 but there is NNOOO wai ill win the WHOLE competition, cant wait till the hols bcoz I wanna do art, ext history, but most importantly I wanna go to the gym HEAPS!!! N work ma ass off…. Not literally, I also am gonna go for am l’s wif cat, so fingers crossed, I also wanna go to the eatser show, n MAYBE lunar park, maybe ill save that for another hols aye!!!??

Well wah have I been doin of late

Well me n cara went to the ct the other dae which was sssssssssssooooooooo interesting!!!! OMG it was tho funni

Well I was late… n there was a huge spider in ma broom AGAIN which was distressing….

Yea n then we RAN into Adriana.. so next thing u noe shes on the train wif us…. Also all of ma cards fell out of ma wallet n mum had to drive all the way to parra to lend me money!!! $$$$ tho bad ok n nxt were o the train… n we quickly grab a 3 seater n then cara was like I cant sit bkwards… so *it was one of those two seats which face eachother * n so sshe sits her self BTWEEN these two random guys.. whom r sittig on a TWO setaer.. n these beefy guys n full squashed wif random cara n in btween them.. n me n Adriana r just looking at each other… n like … *awkwardness* n then she randomly gets up n sits usmwhere else. N leaves me n Adriana sitting opposite these guys whom looked very unimpressed!!!

We had lots of fun at maccas… I was laying on the seats like a hobo n cumin onto cara which was funni

N we were getting brain freezes!!! N so on n so fourth

Work has been fun

I went to a body balance class which comprises of tai chi, yoga n pilaties which was hard work.. even thou I  didn’t work that hard… n ma muscles r still sore buh daijobu hm wah else….

We had hoedowns I was sleeping n laying down on the chairs.. we were all lauhgin el threatened to sit on me if I didn’t b quiet once the movie started!!! Ahaha!!! N it took us 1n a half hours to get form merylands to parra n I was half an hour kate to work which was funni n I was full stressing bcoz we were lost n there was COWS HORSES MINING FARM AGRICULTER N A WHOLE LTO OF WEIRD SHIT ….
